THE HEALING ART OF YIN

INTRODUCTION TO YIN YOGA COURSE

In a world that is asking you to do more, be more, have more, yin offers you a soft place to land and come home to yourself, your body, your breath, and your energy.

What is Yin Yoga?

Yin Yoga is a very slow, gentle, yet simultaneously dynamic and profound practice, where each pose is held for between 2-5 minutes. Holding the pose for this longer period of time allows you to gain access to the deeper layers and connective tissues of your body that you would not normally access in other forms of movement or practice.

Yoga props are frequently used during this practice to provide extra support and comfort. This means that Yin Yoga is suitable for all levels, as each pose can be modified to suit you and your body.

Yin is practised with the eyes closed, while holding a deep connection to, and awareness of the breath. The breath is used to support you to soften into and deepen the pose, as well as cultivating and directing Prana (life-force energy) through your body.

Practising with your eyes closed, remaining still in the pose, and holding a deep connection with your breath, all provide the perfect opportunity to explore your inner terrain. You will notice how your body is feeling, and perhaps where you have been holding on to tension that you weren’t even aware of. And once you are aware of the tension, you can allow it to dissolve through the transmutational power of your breath.

You may also notice in these moments of stillness that emotions begin to bubble up to the surface. Please know that this is normal. Emotions that are yet to be acknowledged or processed are stored in the body, and given the opportunity (such as in an introspective Yin Yoga practice) they will arise to be witnessed. Welcome them.

Emotions are much better being acknowledged and processed, than being suppressed in your body. Tuning into your emotional body will give you vital insight into what your soul is communicating with you.

Yin Yoga gives you the opportunity to connect with the subtleties of your being. Your breath, your emotions, and your life-force energy (known as Prana in Yoga). Each pose holds one or multiple physical, metaphysical (beyond the physical), emotional and energetic qualities, making this a powerful practice for deep personal transformation and healing.

Yin Yoga also reminds you how to move a little slower, be a little more present, and romanticise your life a little more. Doesn’t that sound just lovely to you?
